Its foundation goes back probably to the beginning of the 13th century, when it rose over the ruins of the Roman city of Vatia or Batia. The first records however appear in the medieval period, when Belmonte was one of the fiefdoms of the Brancaleoni Romanea family in Sabina. The lords of Belmonte came probably from one of the proudest members of that lineage, that is Cola Brancaleoni, who fled from Rome since he did not want to accept the rule of Cola di Renzo. In 1477 the fiefdom passed to Gabriele Cesarini and subsequently was placed under the protection of Pope Alexander VI Borgia, who aimed at subduing the whole Reatino territory. Then Belmonte was sold from the Cesarini to the Mattei along with the Sinibalda fortress, and from them to the Lante della Rovere. During the 18th century other lords were the Muti Buzzi and Lepri families, and finally the Lorenzana.
